Ellen Hart, a Queens native from Jamaica crowned Miss Subways in 1959, as well as founder of the iconic Ellen’s Stardust Diner on Broadway, celebrated both her 85th birthday and 85th anniversary of the first Miss Subways beauty pageant at the diner on Tuesday.
“America is celebrating a milestone birthday and so am I,” Hart said. “Every birthday is special, but I’m excited to spend this one with other Miss Subways, and reminisce on what was such a fun time for us that changed our lives.”
Known for its lively 1950s-style atmosphere and singing wait staff, Ellen’s Stardust Diner has become both a tourist destination and a launchpad for many Broadway actors’ careers.
Hart, surrounded by five former Miss Subways, was presented with a proclamation from Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal on Tuesday, declaring June 30, 2026, as “Ellen’s Stardust Diner Appreciation Day.”
